Built in 1808, Pilling Windmill is a prominent skyline feature in the village of Pilling, Lancashire map . In 1866, the sails were removed & the windmill converted to run from a coal fired steam engine. The mill had ceased working by the late 1930's and fell into a state of disrepair. During the 1960's the mill was rescued and made available for private residence. Although partial restoration occured through the following decades, the biggest changes have been seen over the last couple of years when the mill was bought by Nick and Catherine Edwards. On a memorable day in February 2007, the windmill was finally topped with a traditional “Lancashire boat top” cap, bringing a feature to the village skyline which has not been seen since the early 1860’s.
This website is dedicated to the history of the windmill, collating written and photographic records from 1808 to present day.
